Coquitlam Acquires Veteran Forward and Loses Boyd, Trail Fills Out Roster, Langley Recruits Two for 2015-16, BCHL Alumni Update:

My apologies for the lack of posts this week, but I received a book as a gift and couldn't put it down, which puts a serious dent in time for blogging.

The book is called Ice Storm: The Rise and Fall of the Greatest Vancouver Canucks Team Ever, by Bruce Dowbiggin. I'll spare you a lengthy book review as there are things I did and didn't like about the book. That said, if you're a Canucks fan, it's worth checking out.

It's available at all the usual spots, find it here on Amazon.ca.

There was one trade at the BCHL Trade Deadline that wasn't reported anywhere... until the Tri-City News newspaper came out this week. The article, written by Gary McKenna, indicates that the Coquitlam Express struck a deal other than the one with Salmon Arm that saw Anthony Gardner go to the SilverBacks for futures.

It turns out that Coquitlam also acquired 20-year-old forward Thanvir Bandesha as a free agent after he was released from the Orangeville Flyers. from the Orangeville Flyers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League for future considerations. Bandesha is from Abbotsford and posted three points (two goals, one assist) in 23 games with the Flyers this season. He played one game in the BCHL as an affiliate player for Langley back in 2011-12.

The Express had room to add Bandesha after 21-year-old forward Cody Boyd left the team to attend Canisius College. Back in November, Boyd committed to attend Canisius this coming September, but decided to start his education with the Winter term. He finishes his BCHL career with 34 points (nine goals, 25 assists) in 92 games. Boyd was excellent in the playoffs last season, notching nine points (three goals, six assists) in 16 games as Coquitlam won the Fred Page Cup.

After trading 20-year-old captain Scott Davidson and 20-year-old blueliner Griffyn Martin on BCHL deadline day, the Trail Smoke Eaters were short of the minimum 20 player roster requirement.

As a result, the Smokies signed a pair of 1996-born players from junior B. They added 18-year-old forward Sheldon Brett from the Comox Valley Glacier Kings of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League and 18-year-old forward Jordan Passmore from the North Okanagan Knights of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

Brett, who's from Courtenay, BC and played 25 games with Trail as a 17-year-old last season, had 43 points (20 goals, 23 assists) in 29 games with the Glacier Kings this season. He had nine points (three goals, six assists) with the Smoke Eaters after joining them in December 2013 before being released during the off-season.

Passmore is from Kamloops, BC and spent 15 games with the Chase Heat, posting 15 points (seven goals, eight assists), before being traded to North Okanagan at the beginning of November. He had 19 points (four goals, 15 assists) in 20 games with the Knights.

The BCHL announced on Twitter earlier this week that the Merritt-Trail game scheduled for last Saturday, is rescheduled for this Tuesday, January 20th. The game was postponed because the Smoke Eaters bus had mechanical problems en route to Merritt last Saturday. It's a bit of a tough break for the Centennials as the attendance at a weeknight game is likely to be significantly less than a Saturday night.

The Cents most recent weeknight game, which was last Wednesday vs. Langley, had a posted attendance of 520. In comparison, Merritt's most recent Saturday night home game was on December 13th against Salmon Arm, and the posted attendance was 738. The Centennials will try to boost attendance for the rescheduled game vs. Trail by making admission just $2 across the board.

18-year-old Cents foward Cole Chorney has been added to the protected list of the WHL's Everett Silvertips. The Leduc, Alberta native has eight points (four goals, four assists) in 16 games since joining Merritt in November. According to Nick Patterson of The Herald newspaper, Chorney will join the Silvertips for two games this coming week. Patterson's article is here

The Langley Rivermen are active on the recruiting trail and have received commitments from two players already for the 2015-16 season. Coming to the Fraser Valley are 17-year-old forwards Justin Fregona and Adam Sinclair of St. Andrew's College, a university prep school in Aurora, Ontario.

Sinclair is the captain and Fregona the assistant captain at St. Andrew's this season. Both players are committed to NCAA schools, with Sinclair headed to Harvard in September 2016 and Fregona off to the University of New Hampshire this fall.

Stats aren't available for this season, but in 2013-14, Sinclair had 46 points (16 goals, 30 assists) in 48 games with the St. Andrew's while Fregona notched 61 points (28 goals, 33 assists) in 53 games. Players aren't able to officially sign with teams for the 2015-16 season until June 1st.

Forward Storm Wahlrab (Victoria, 2013-15) signed with the Lone Star Brahmas of the North American Hockey League. The 20-year-old was traded by the Grizzlies to Estevan of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League on January 10th, but balked at reporting to the Bruins and the deal was nullified. Wahlrab had four assists in 20 games with Victoria this season.
---
Forward Devin Muller (Salmon Arm, 2010-12) has signed a two-year extension with Chaux-de-Fonds (Swiss National League B) through the 2016-17 season. Muller has 15 points (five goals, ten assists) in 27 games with Chaux-de-Fonds this season.
---
Forward Curtis McKenzie (Penticton, 2007-09) is back in the NHL after being recalled by Dallas from its AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars. McKenzie has 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in 16 games for Texas, and one goal in 14 games for Dallas this season.
---
Forward Sahir Gill (Vernon, 2008-10) has signed a professional try-out with the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs. Gill has split this season between the Bulldogs, the American Hockey League’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers. In one game with Hamilton, he had no points. In 12 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Gill recorded three points (one goal, two assists) and in 15 games with Wheeling, he has 15 points (four goals, 11 assists).
---
Defenseman Nicholas Rioux (Quesnel/Prince George, 2005-07) signed a professional try-out with the AHL's Iowa Wild. Rioux played three games with Iowa earlier this season without registering a point. He's played 31 games for Quad City of the ECHL, recording 14 points (two goals, 12 assists).
