BCHL Showcase Returns to Chilliwack in 2014:

For the third straight season, the BCHL Showcase event, which kicks off the regular season is scheduled for the rink pictured above, Prospera Centre in Chilliwack.

The league announced the decision in one line as part of a release detailing the outcomes of this season's Semi-Annual General Meeting with the governors and team personnel.
The league also confirmed it will begin the 2014-15 season by holding its third Showcase event at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack. The dates are tentatively set for Sept. 5 to 7 but will be confirmed in the coming months.
If this year's Showcase follows the format of the previous two events, it will see each BCHL team play two games - which count in the regular season standings - against teams outside of its division. More than 200 professional and collegiate scouts and coaches have attended each Showcase and I'd expect this year to be no different, if not more.

The Chilliwack Progress newspaper posted this article on its' website on Thursday:

The BCHL released notes from its semi-annual board of governors meeting late Thursday afternoon, confirming Chilliwack as the site of the third annual BCHL Showcase event.

Prospera Centre has already hosted two of these, bringing every BCHL team to town for a weekend of games.

Next fall's Showcase is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 5-7, with those dates still to be confirmed.

The BCHL has 16 teams and each one plays two games at the Showcase, which has become a must-see event for collegiate talent evaluators.

As the host, Chilliwack plays one game as the home team and one as the 'away' team.

Alberni Valley Gets Jake Kauppila from Trail for Jakson Elynuik:

In what looks like a trade that could really benefit both teams, the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and Trail Smoke Eaters hooked up on a deal before the BCHL Trade Deadline.

It sees the Bulldogs get 18-year-old forward Jake Kauppila and futures from Trail while 18-year-old Jakson Elynuik and futures head to the Smokies.

Because he's committed to Michigan Tech for next season, Kauppila is essentially a rental for Alberni Valley while Elynuik, who's the son of former Winnipeg Jets great Pat Elynuik, should play a significant role for the Smoke Eaters for the remainder of the 2013-14 season and next season as well.

To Alberni Valley Bulldogs:
F Jake Kauppila (95)
+ Future Considerations

To Trail Smoke Eaters:
F Jakson Elynuik (95) + Future Considerations

Neither team has posted anything about the trade on their respective websites, but the deal is on the BCHL site and Bulldogs play-by-play man Evan Hammond posted this on his blog:

The Bulldogs made a move today acquiring '95 F Jake Kauppila and Future Considerations from the Trail Smoke Eaters for '95 F Jakson Elynuik and Future Considerations.

In 41 games, Kauppila has 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points. He had 3 powerplay goals and 1 short handed marker.

The Bulldogs have completed their activity leading up to tonight's 6pm/8pm deadline.

West Kelowna Moves Defenceman Taylor Graham to AJHL's Spruce Grove Saints:

With the addition of Nathan Craft from Langley earlier this week, the West Kelowna Warriors were one player over the roster limit of 22 so we knew GM and Head Coach Rylan Ferster wasn't done making moves before tomorrow's deadline.

Today word came down that the Warriors sent 20-year-old defenceman Taylor Graham to the Spruce Grove Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League for 18-year-old forward Devon McAndrews and future considerations.

West Kelowna's roster now sits at 22, so I don't expect to see McAndrews in the BCHL any time soon. Plus, the Edmonton product is still on the roster of the Tri-City Americans of the WHL. He started the season with Spruce Grove and was brought up by the Ams back in October.

If I were to wager a guess as to why his CJHL rights were included in the deal, my bet is that the actual deal sees Graham moved to Spruce Grove for cash. If a player is traded to a team outside of BC for solely financial considerations, then he has to clear BCHL waivers and based on the market for veteran defencemen over the past week, chances are Graham wouldn't have cleared. The inclusion of McAndrews' rights meant Graham didn't have to be placed on BCHL waivers for the trade to happen. It's not the first time a trade has happened this way and it certainly won't be the last.

However, I should mention that I'm just speculating and perhaps we may see McAndrews play in the BCHL this season or next. After all, the WHL Trade Deadline is tomorrow as well.

To West Kelowna Warriors:
F Devon McAndrews (95) + Future Considerations

To Spruce Grove Saints:
D Taylor Graham (93)

Here's the release from the Warriors on this move, and their others leading up to the deadline:

A day ahead of the 2014 BCHL trading deadline, West Kelowna’s roster is set.

The Warriors added a veteran presence to their blue-line and some grit to the forward corps, as Head Coach / GM Rylan Ferster put the finishing touches on his team.

Ferster began by acquiring ‘free-agent’ Ryan Fraser-Lee (’93 D).  Fraser-Lee won a BCHL championship with Surrey last year and had nine points in 23 games this before being released by the Eagles (partly due to injury).

West Kelowna then traded (’94 D) Zane Schartz and future considerations to Trail in exchange for (’93 D) Braden Pears.

A veteran of 223 BCHL games, Pears will finish his junior career with the Warriors after previous stops in Powell River, Salmon Arm, and Trail, as well as brief stints in Victoria and Coquitlam.

“He’s an offensive, puck-moving guy” says Ferster of the Victoria native, acknowledging the key role Pears has played for the Smoke Eaters so far this year.

The Warriors also added some truculence to the forward group, acquiring (’94 F) Nathan Craft from Langley for future considerations.

Originally from Kitimat, Craft had 19 points and 64 penalty minutes with the Rivermen this year.

“He gives us an element of physicality and a guy who’s going to be difficult to play against down the stretch.”

A final move saw the Warriors deal (’93 D) Taylor Graham to the AJHL’s Spruce Grove Saints, in exchange for the CJHL playing rights to Tri-City Americans forward Devon McAndrews.

McAndrews is not expected to play in the BCHL this year, while Brennan Clark will remain on injury reserve for the remainder of the year.

Time will tell if these are the right moves” Ferster says of the changes.  “We added two 20 year-old defencemen with some good experience and a forward who’s difficult to play against.”

“We won’t know until the end of the year where we’re at, but feel we’ve upgraded in some areas.”

Nanaimo Plucks Defenceman Shay Laurent from Chilliwack:

The flurry of trades on Wednesday wrapped up with word in the early evening that the Chilliwack Chiefs dealt their third player this week who wasn't returning to the team next season.

This time, the Chiefs shipped 20-year-old defenceman Shay Laurent to the Nanaimo Clippers for future considerations.

I mentioned during the post about Nanaimo acquiring Luke Sandler from Surrey that the Clippers were over the 22-man roster and now they are two players over the limit, so it's guaranteed that Mike Vandekamp isn't done tinkering with his team.

It's interesting to note that of the thirteen trades that occurred in the last six days, eleven of them have involved players who won't be back in the BCHL next season, either due to being overage or moving onto to collegiate hockey. So suffice to say, there are a number of teams out there looking for rental players to put them over the hump into the stretch drive.

To Nanaimo Clippers:
D Shay Laurent (93) To Chilliwack Chiefs:
Future Considerations

Here's the release from the Chiefs:

The Chilliwack Chiefs have moved veteran defenseman Shay Laurent to the Nanaimo Clippers in exchange for future considerations.

The Chiefs entire organization would like to thank Shay for his commitment to Chiefs Hockey on and off of the ice in Chilliwack and wish him the best of luck in his future hockey endeavors.

The Chiefs next home game is this Saturday vs Langley at 7pm at Prospera Centre. Visit the Chiefs website at www.chilliwackchiefs.net or call the Chiefs office at 604.392.4433 for more details.

Coquitlam Picks Up Salmon Arm Defenceman Mark Whiteley:

The Coquitlam Express got into the trade action today, grabbing 20-year-old defenceman Mark Whiteley from the Salmon Arm SilverBacks for future considerations.

Whiteley is a veteran of 92 career BCHL games and will likely be given a prominent role on the Express blueline for the remainder of the season.

The move allows the SilverBacks to look at adding a player ahead of the deadline without worrying about subtracting one for their roster.

To Coquitlam Express:
D Mark Whiteley (93) To Salmon Arm SilverBacks:
Future Considerations

The Express didn't post anything about the trade on their website, but play-by-play man Eddie Gregory noted it on his blog:

The Express have added a pair of 20 year old defenceman in advance of the January 10th roster deadline.

They have acquired experienced BCHL blueliner Mark Whiteley and signed JD Cotroneo.

Whiteley comes to the Express from the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in exchange for future considerations. The 6'0 Surrey native has dressed for 27 games with the Silverbacks this season. But has spent the majority of his 92 career BCHL career with the Langley Rivermen/Chiefs franchise.

This season he has 1 goal and 8 assists for 9 points in 35 games split between Langley and Salmon Arm. He has 8 goals and 32 assists for 40 points in his BCHL career.

Cotroneo was with St. Thomas University (NCAA DIV. III) where he didn't dress for a game. He spent the majority of his junior career in the NAHL split between Traverse City, Topeka, Aberdeen and the Soo Eagles where he played 49 games over the previous two seasons scoring 2 goals and 7 asssists for 9 points.

The 5'11 180lb Woodbury Minnesota native also played 14 games with Des Moines of the USHL and didn't register a point during the 2011-12 season.

The SilverBacks did issue a release:

The Salmon Arm SilverBacks have made a move ahead of the BCHL's impending Trade Deadline, this Friday, by sending 20 year old Defenceman Mark Whiteley to the Coquitlam Express, for Future Considerations.

Whiteley, a native of Surrey, B.C, joined the SilverBacks earlier in the season from the Langley Rivermen, and posted 6 assists in 27 games in his time with the SilverBacks.

'Backs General Manager and Head Coach Troy Mick says the move of Whiteley allows the 'Backs an open roster position "We really appreciate the work Mark did for our organization, on, and off the ice, but we felt that the best way to improve our club was to make a deal that gave us space for another player; while at the same time adding Future Considerations from the Express."

Mick says the organization would like to wish Mark all the best in Coquitlam, with the Express, as they continue to work towards a Playoff berth in the Mainland Division.

The SilverBacks hit the road this weekend, with games in Powell River, Alberni Valley, and Cowichan Valley, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, respectively.

Trail Deals Leading Scorer Travis Stephens to Victoria:

Trail GM and Head Coach Nick Deschenes has made it no secret that he's building the roster with an eye toward next season and the Smoke Eaters made a move signifying that further today, sending 20-year-old leading scorer Travis Stephens to Victoria for future considerations.

This season is easily Stephens' best in the BCHL as he joins his fifth organization as a full time player. He was an AP for Victoria, Nanaimo and Cowichan Valley at various times during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.

Stephens expressed what a thrill it is to play in his hometown on Twitter:
Victoria made room to add Stephens earlier in the day by releasing 19-year-old forward Joel Gaudet. Neither team has confirmed the Stephens trade on their websites or social media, but it is posted on the BCHL website and he is already listed on the Grizzlies roster.

To Victoria Grizzlies:
F Travis Stephens (93)

To Trail Smoke Eaters:

Nanaimo Adds Veteran Forward Luke Sandler from Surrey:

Although not officially confirmed by either team or the BCHL, an article in the Surrey Now newspaper noted that the Eagles have moved 20-year-old forward Luke Sandler to the Nanaimo Clippers.

The move puts Nanaimo over the allowable roster limit, so I'd expect another transaction to come for the Clippers.

As for Sandler, it's his third BCHL stop this season, but the veteran has average nearly a point per game through 68 games in the league.

To Nanaimo Clippers:
F Luke Sandler (93)
To Surrey Eagles:

BCHL Clarifies Trade Deadline Details:

The BCHL released details on its Twitter account this morning regarding the January 10th trade deadline, specifically as it relates to times and roster size.

Basically, the details are as follows:

- Rosters must have a minimum of 20 players and a maximum of 22 players.

- The deadline for transactions between separate leagues (i.e. BCHL to AJHL) is 6 pm PST.

- The deadline for transactions between BCHL teams is 8 pm PST.

The BCHL also issued this release today, in conjunction with the Tweet:

The British Columbia Hockey League examined its media policy from last year regarding media access to information on transactions occurring on the Jan. 10 roster deadline. The league has altered the regulation for this season.

The regulation now reads:

BCHL coaches and general managers will be allowed to discuss the details of any team transaction once all players involved in a given transaction have been notified.

Teams caught in contravention of this regulation are subject to a fine.

BCHL Roster Numbers Heading into January 10th Trade Deadline:

As I do each year, I've calculated each BCHL team's number of roster players, number of 20-year-olds (or 1993-born) and number of imports heading into this Friday's Hockey Canada carding and trade deadline. These numbers do not include players on injured reserve as they don't count towards roster numbers.

Teams are allowed 22 players overall on their roster, of which no more than six can be 1993-born players and no more than seven can be import players.

This should show what some teams are able to add or subtract when the deadline arrives. As always, any corrections and comments are welcome and encouraged.
