Cents fall 4-2 to Trail:

The Centennials once again showed that they're no pushovers as they almost rallied back to tie last night's game after Trail built a 3-0 lead. Unfortunately their rally just came up short as the Cents fell 4-2 to the Smoke Eaters.

The win allowed Trail to move into to third in the Interior Conference, which means a first round playoff match-up with the Centennials. Of course, a lot can change between now and February 19th, but if the post-season started today, that would be the series.

Here's the recap from MerrittCentennials.com:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Merritt, BC - January 26, 2011

Matt Larose made 33 saves as the Trail Smoke Eaters beat the Merritt Centennials 4-2 in B-C Hockey League action Wednesday night at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.

Larose outduelled Centennials goaltender Lino Chimienti, who made 26 saves for Merritt (19-22-1-6).

Nic DeSousa, Adam Boytinck and Erik Cooper staked Trail (29-19-2-1) to a 3-0 lead through 40 minutes before Evan Stack and Regan Soquila scored in the third period to bring the Cents to within one. Sam Mellor salted the game away with an empty net goal with 35 seconds remaining.

David Sabey, Jeff Jones, Brandon Pfeil and Reece Willcox each had assists for Merritt in the loss.

The Centennials finished the night 0-for-4 on the power play while the Smoke Eaters went 0-for-2 on the man advantage.

Merritt's next game is Friday in Surrey against the Eagles. The two teams meet again on Saturday at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.

Head Coach Dave Dupas out in Prince George?

I haven't seen anything about an immediate resignation or dismissal from Prince George Head Coach Dave Dupas, but did notice this on the Spruce Kings website.

If Dupas hasn't been dismissed in PG, then my thinking is that he's welcome to throw his hat in the ring to be the next bench boss of the Spruce Kings and the team's Board of Directors is interested in seeing which other candidates for the job are out there.

However, the question is whether or not this makes Dupas a lame duck coach for the remainder of the season or if these final dozen games are an audition for him to prove himself moving ahead to next season.

Cents win in overtime 1-0 over PG:

The cardiac kids did it again as the Merritt Centennials used overtime for a 1-0 win in Prince George. Evan Stack notched the winner while congrats go out to Tyler Steel for his first career shutout. In my humble opinion, it's the first of many. The win is also the Cents first in PG since February 2006.

Here's the summary from MerrittCentennials.com:

January 22, 2011 - Prince George, BC

Tyler Steel stopped all 24 shots he faced and Evan Stack scored the lone goal of the game at 1:26 of overtime as the Merritt Centennials posted a 1-0 victory over the Prince George Spruce Kings in BCHL actio Saturday night.

The shutout is Steel's first of his junior 'A' career. It came after he gave up six goals in his last start Tuesday in Vernon. Stack's goal is his ninth of the season while Reece Willcox chipped in with an assist on the deciding goal. The win is the second straight in overtime for Merritt (19-21-0-6) after a 4-3 victory Friday in Quesnel.

Rookie Kirk Thompson made 24 saves for Prince George (10-35-0-3).

The Cents finished 0-for-4 on the power play while the Spruce Kings also wound up 0-for-4 with the man advantage.

Merritt's next game is Sunday in Quesnel as the Centennials wind up a three game weekend.

Cents head coach and GM Luke Pierce join Q101 play by play announcer Alex Grebenyuk on tonight's post-game show.

Cents need OT to beat Quesnel 4-3:

Well it wasn't picture-perfect, but the Cents will take the two points as they opening a stretch of seven games in ten days last night with a 4-3 overtime win in Quesnel.

I like the fact that the Cents showed their perseverance once again by twice battling back from two-goal deficits. Here's the recap from MerrittCentennials.com:

January 21, 2011 - Quesnel, BC

Max Vallis' overtime goal powered the Merritt Centennials past the Quesnel Millionaires 4-3 in BC Hockey League action Friday night at The Vault.

Evan Stack, Regan Soquila and Dustin Lebrun scored in regulation time for Merritt (18-21-0-6). Stack's goal came on the power play. Jeff Jones finished with three assists and J.P. Witkop, with his first career BCHL points, had two assists as well. Stack also added an assist.

Skyler Smutek and Michael Spring staked Quesnel (11-30-2-5) to a 2-0 lead by the 10:08 mark of the second period. That lead slipped away though, setting the stage for Soquila and Stack to score and tie the game after Thomas Hardy had put the Millionaires ahead 3-1.

Lino Chimienti earned the win for Merritt with 27 saves, while Bryton Udy stopped 27 shots for the Mills.

The Centennials went 1-for-5 with the man advantage, while Quesnel scored once on three opportunities.

Merritt's next game is Saturday in Prince George. The Millionaires are off until Sunday, when they host the Cents in a return match-up of Friday's game.

Former Spruce Kings/Vees netminder Jordan White to back-up for San Jose tonight:

Jordan White, who played in the BCHL as recently as the 2008-09 season, will back-up San Jose Sharks starting netminder Antti Niemi tonight after being signed as an emergency call-up.

Here's the release from the Sharks website:

SJ Picks A Canadian College Player
Niittymaki's Absence Forces Sharks To Sign College Goalie
Thursday, 01.20.2011 / 6:35 PM / News
By San Jose Sharks Staff
Jordan White will serve as the Sharks back-up goaltender on Thursday night against Vancouver due to an injury to Sharks goaltender Antero Niittymaki.
Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed goaltender Jordan White to a one-game amateur tryout. White will be in uniform tonight when the Sharks play the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena.

White currently plays for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (CIS). This season, he has posted a 7-11 record in 18 games, posting a 3.51 goals-against average and an .876 save percentage.

The six-foot-two, 175-pound native of Surrey, B.C. is currently in his second season with UBC.

In a related move, goaltender Antero Niittymaki was placed on injured reserve with a lower body injury.

Below are some stats on White.

In his second season with the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, White is the only goalie in the Canada West Conference to start in every one of his team's games this season (18) - ironic that his first game as a back-up this season is with the San Jose Sharks.

While playing in the WHL with Portland in 2007-08, he had the game of his life when he made 68 saves in a 4-0 loss to Seattle.

He played for UBC against the Norwegian Olympic Team last February in a tune-up game for Norway prior to the 2010 Olympics (lost 4-1).

White played in the Western Hockey League with Prince George (2006-07) and Portland (2007-08 and 2008-09) before joining UBC.

White's BCHL profile is here: http://www.bchl.ca/leagues/rosters_profile.cfm?clientID=1413&leagueID=2393&playerID=113090&teamID=0

Former Cents Jordan Wilkins and Jose Reyes leave TRU Wolf Pack:

The following is from the TRU Wolf Pack men's hockey team blog:
The Wolfpack has also lost forwards Jose Reyes as he moves on through his studies to attend SAIT in Calgary and defenseman Jordan Wilkins as his course schedule directly conflicted with the Wolfpack’s regular season schedule.

Wilkins, who's from Princeton, had one goal and 15 PIM in 15 games with the Cents during the 2007-08 season. He was traded by Merritt to Penticton in August 2008 and was then sent to St. Albert of the AJHL in October of that year as part of that massive five team trade which saw the Cents wind up with Alex Goodship and Brad Bourke. Wilkins played 14 games with the Steel, was released after the season and signed with Surrey before joining the KIJHL's Kamloops Storm last season.

Reyes never actually signed with the Centennials, but was AP'd two times, during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. He had two goals in six career BCHL games.

Great to see former Cents sniper Wade MacLeod in the running for the 2011 Hobey Baker Award for the second straight season. I'm hoping to chat with Wade in the near future to get his thoughts on the nomination and his season so far with NE University. Again from MerrittCentennials.com:

January 17, 2011 - St. Paul, Minnesota

A Merritt Centennials graduate has the first step towards capturing NCAA Division I hockey's top individual honour after being named to an initial list of 50 nominees for the 2011 Hobey Baker Award.

Forward Wade McLeod, a senior at Northeastern University is nominated for the second straight year. The Port Coquitlam native is one of six BCHL grads in the running. MacLeod stands eighth in all-time Centennials scoring with 65 goals and 81 assists in 101 career games.

Award criteria include candidates mimicking the superlative character traits put forth by the award’s namesake, Hobey Baker, a World War I flying star better known as America’s greatest amateur athlete in his day. Award candidates must exhibit strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.

The 2011 Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced from a field of three Hobey Hat Trick finalists on Friday, April 8, 2011 during the NCAA Frozen Four Championships in St. Paul, Minnesota. The 31st annual award announcement honoring college hockey’s top player is tentatively scheduled to be televised live during prime time on ESPNU.

Cents Acquire Defenceman J.P. Witkop from Grande Prairie:

(New Centennials defenceman J.P. Witkop)

Cents head coach and GM Luke Pierce did the expected at the BCHL trade deadline and added to his blueline corps, picking up 20-year-old defenceman Jon-Paul (J.P.) Witkop from the Grande Prairie Storm for future considerations.

I had the chance to chat with the newest Centennial this morning.

Coach Pierce also joined me on the morning show today to discuss the trade and last week's games against Trail and Salmon Arm.

Here's the release from MerrittCentennials.com:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Merritt, BC - January 10, 2010

The Merritt Centennials are pleased to announce the acquisition of 20-year-old defenceman Jon-Paul (J.P.) Witkop from the Grande Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League for future considerations.

Witkop, who's from Fairport, New York, has three assists and 28 PIM in 21 games with Grande Prairie this season. He was the captain and played 13 games with Rochester of the Eastern Junior Hockey League earlier this season, posting four assists and 50 PIM. Witkop played two seasons with Syracuse of the EJHL from 2008-2010, finishing with a goal, 22 assists and 40 PIM in 71 games.

"We are excited that we were able to add the piece we felt was necessary for our team to have success down the stretch and into the playoffs," said Cents Head Coach/GM Luke Pierce. "With an already strong defence core, adding J.P. only reinforces our identity as a difficult team to play against. We look forward to having J.P. in the line-up on Saturday against Westside and for the remainder of the season."

For further information, please contact Cents Head Coach & GM Luke Pierce at 250-378-3607.

The Merritt Centennials, proudly celebrating 38 years as the BCHL's longest continuously run franchise, are a non-profit, community owned Junior 'A' Hockey Club run by a dedicated team of investors, directors, and volunteers.

*Updated* Trade Deadline Report:

Here's a list of trades which have been confirmed from various sources so far:

D Sam Waterfield has been acquired by Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL) from Dawson Creek Rage (NAHL) for future considerations. Waterfield, who has 20 games BCHL experience with Nanaimo and Burnaby, has 14 points (3g, 11a) in 29 games with the Rage this season. . . .

D Justin Fillion (14-27-41 in 44 games) has been traded by Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL) to Victoria Grizzlies (BCHL) for D Dylan Nowakowski (4-3-7 in 15 games), who was then traded along with D Mike Puddifant (2-6-8 in 15 games) to Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL) for D Ryan Renz (3-7-10 in 22 games). Renz was then dealt to Vernon Vipers (BCHL) for F Todd Skirving (4-5-9 in 34 games) and future considerations. So it all breaks down like this:

- Prince George gets Skirving and futures
- Vernon gets Renz
- Victoria gets Fillion
- Alberni Valley gets Nowakowski and Puddifant

F RJay Berra (34-21-55 in 45 games) and D Derek Henderson (1-6-7 in 44 games) have been dealt by Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL) to Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL) for D Ben Woodley (6-26-32 in 41 games) and F Dustin Beairsto (4-3-7 in 37 games). . . .

F Nic DeSousa has been acquired by Trail Smoke Eaters (BCHL) from Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL). No word at this point what the Smoke Eaters give up to the Spruce Kings. . . .

Although all of these trades have been reported via team personnel or official team websites, it should be noted that no trades are official until signed off by BCHL commissioner John Grisdale and posted on the league website. The league has embargoed the release of all trade details until 10 am tomorrow. Anything I post can be considered "unofficial" until then.

I did talk with Cents coach and GM Luke Pierce tonight and he was trying to acquire a defenceman, whether or not he was successful will become clear tomorrow. Luke did tell me that he thought he had a deal or two done, only to have it fall apart for one reason or another.

Trade Deadline Day:

No trades to report just yet, but I just received word from Cents coach/GM Luke Pierce after practice that there are a lot of discussions going on around the various leagues, but from a Centennials point of view, nothing to report.

As soon as I know of anything confirmed, I'll post it here.

Sunday, January 9, 2011

Sunday Moves:

D Elliot Richardson has been traded from Quesnel Millionaires (BCHL) to Wellington Dukes (OJHL). There's no word what's coming back to Quesnel for Richardson, but I believe it to be futures. He had 6 points (1g, 5a) this season split between the Millionaires and Vernon. . . .

F Brendon Fornwald (Prince George, 2010-11) has signed with Humboldt Broncos (SJHL) for the rest of the season. Fornwold, who was released by the Spruce Kings on December 2, had 7 points (1g, 6a) in 26 BCHL games this season. . . .

BCHL Trade Deadline Thoughts, Cents fall 3-1 in Salmon Arm:

I'm not sure if it's because of the parity in the BCHL this season, or that so many teams are maxed out at 20 year olds, but I get the suspicion that tomorrow's trade deadline could be quieter than in past years.

Here's what we've seen by way of transactions since December 1 this season:

1. The Vernon Vipers Hockey Club transfers the playing rights of Bryton Udy (G)(93), Elliot Richardson (91)(D) and future considerations to the Quesnel Millionaires Hockey Club in exchange for the playing rights of Kirby Halcrow (91)(G).

Despite the defeat, was it ever great for Dylan Playfair to get the monkey off his back and notch his first career BCHL point and first point of the season!
