Former Cents Forward Dustin Johnson Joins Canberra Knights, Former Vees Captain Brett Hextall Signs with Phoenix:
I haven't seen any official news release from any source, but former Cents forward Dustin Johnson is on the roster of the Canberra Knights of the Australian Ice Hockey League. Johnson, who played 110 games with Merritt from 2008-10, scored for the Knights in their season opener today, a 7-3 loss to the Newcastle North Stars.
Canberra is the fourth team Johnson's been on this season. He started with the Centennials, was traded to Victoria in October, and joined Nelson (KIJHL) in December before returning to the Grizzlies for the playoffs. Johnson finishes his BCHL with 134 points (72g, 62a) in 150 games.
Another ex-BCHL player has signed with an NHL club as Brett Hextall (Penticton, 2006-08) inked an entry-level deal with Phoenix.
Here's the story from the Associated Press:
The Phoenix Coyotes signed North Dakota junior forward Brett Hextall to an entry-level contract Friday.
Hextall, the 23-year-old son of former NHL goalie Ron Hextall, had 13 goals, 16 assists and 63 penalty minutes in 39 games this past season for the Fighting Sioux. In 115 games in three seasons at North Dakota, he had 39 goals, 42 assists and 242 penalty minutes.
Phoenix drafted the five-foot-11, 195-pound Hextall, from Manhattan Beach, Calif., in the sixth round in 2008.
Hextall's grandfather, Bryan Hextall Jr.; great grandfather, Bryan Hextall Sr.; and great uncle, Dennis Hextall, also played in the NHL.
Phoenix was swept by Detroit in the first round of the playoffs.
