BCHL Trade Deadline Thoughts, Cents fall 3-1 in Salmon Arm:

I'm not sure if it's because of the parity in the BCHL this season, or that so many teams are maxed out at 20 year olds, but I get the suspicion that tomorrow's trade deadline could be quieter than in past years.

Here's what we've seen by way of transactions since December 1 this season:

1. The Vernon Vipers Hockey Club transfers the playing rights of Bryton Udy (G)(93), Elliot Richardson (91)(D) and future considerations to the Quesnel Millionaires Hockey Club in exchange for the playing rights of Kirby Halcrow (91)(G).

2. The Victoria Grizzlies Hockey Club transfers the playing rights of Bruin McDonald (92)(D) to the Vernon Vipers Hockey Club in exchange ro future considerations.

3. The Quesnel Millionaires Hockey Club transfers the playing rights of Brett Penner to the Flin Flon Bombers Hockey Club of the SJHL in exchange for future considerations.

4. The Quesnel Millionaires Hockey Club transfers the playing rights of Sam Higgins (90) to the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons Hockey Club of the AJHL in exchange for future considerations.

5. The Coquitlam Express Hockey Club have transferred the playing rights of Brad Reid (90)(F) to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks Hockey Club in exchange for future considerations.

So that's five deals involving seven teams and seven players.

Let's have a look at last season between December 1 and January 9 (the day before the deadline):

1. The Quesnel Millionaires Hockey Club acquires the playing rights of Justin Hogan (90)(F) from the Williams Lake Timberwolves Hockey Club in exchange for future considerations.

2. The Langley Chiefs Hockey Club transfers the playing rights of Andrew Walsh (90)(G) to the Prince George Spruce Kings Hockey Club in exchange for the playing rights of Brendan Nadolny (90)(D) and future considerations.

15. The Nanaimo Clippers Hockey Club acquire the playing rights of Rys Hadfield (G) from the Grande Prairie Storm Hockey Club of the AJHL in exchange for future considerations.

So that's 15 trades involving 19 teams and 21 players. Safe to say it was much busier 12 months ago than it's been this season.

That's a total of 23 trades involving 27 teams and 30 players, so there is a trend of less moves. Of course, today and tomorrow could end up being as busy when it's all said and done, but I wouldn't bet on it.

The Cents modest two game winning streak came to an end with a 3-1 loss in Salmon Arm last night. The loss drops Merritt to 6-4 in its last ten, but the Centennials still have won five of their last seven games.

Despite the defeat, was it ever great for Dylan Playfair to get the monkey off his back and notch his first career BCHL point and first point of the season!
