Cents Intrasquad Game, Recent Moves:

My coaching debut wasn't much of a success as Team Merritt News (Team Black) blanked Team Q101 (Team White) 5-0 in the Cents annual intrasquad game last night. There was a GREAT crowd at the game, the amount of interest in the Centennials this season is as high as I've seen it in my eight years in Merritt.

After the game, the Cents trimmed their training camp roster by nine more players: Forwards Daylan Robertson, Brad Robinson, Ben Reinbolt, Caleb Staniland and River Lafferty, defencemen Lucas Hildebrand and Brett DeFrias, and goaltenders Dusty Hyde and Dylan Quinn. The cuts leave 34 players still with the team, including veterans. Not included in that total are Jakob Reichert and Austin Baecker, as both left training camp to attend WHL camps with Chilliwack and Seattle respectively. Here's the summary from the Cents website:

Merritt, BC - August 27, 2010

The Merritt Centennials played their annual intrasquad game Friday night at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena. 33 Cents hopefuls took to the ice that saw Team Black skate away with a 5-0 victory over Team White. The Centennials coaching staff now has the task of reducing the team's roster to no more than 23 players for the regular season opener on the road Friday September 10 in Trail.

Dustin Lebrun (92) and Eric Schmidt (93) each led Black with a goal and an assist. Jared Andersen (90), Cole Buckley (92), and Michael Hails (94) shared the shutout in goal for Team Black. The game featured four fights. There were two in the second period, one between Silvan Harper (92) and Sean Maktaak (92), and one between Harper and Steve Tresierra (90). Joshua McGladdery (92) battled Brent Fletcher (92) while Lebrun locked horns with Kyle Clerke (92) in the third period.

Cents Release Sam Gemmell, More On Training Camp With Luke Pierce, Former Centennial Brandon Campos Signs With ECHL's Idaho Steelheads:

(Former Cents Forward Sam Gemmell)

It's like Christmas Eve for hockey fans in the Nicola Valley as the Centennials open training camp tomorrow morning at Memorial Arena. I had the chance to talk to Cents coach and GM Luke Pierce about camp opening tomorrow.

In the interview, Luke reveals that the team has released forward Sam Gemmell (90) after efforts to trade him were unsuccessful.

With Gemmell being released, here's what the Cents roster numbers look like heading into training camp, assuming the final roster includes 20 skaters. I'm going to assume the Cents go with 13 forwards, seven defenceman and two goaltenders. Players are ranked in terms of points last season.

Forwards
Dustin Johnson (90)
Jeff Jones (91)
Alexander MacMillan (90)
David Sabey (91)
Stephen Wall (91)
Silvan Harper (92)
Jakob Reichert (93)

The asterisks represent spots that need to be filled and thus, there are six openings (at minimum) up front for the Cents. I would think that none of the returning players should feel safe as any of them could be outplayed by someone coming in and trying to make the team.

Defence
Steve Tresierra (90)
Jeff Zmurchyk (90)
Kam Crawford (91)
*
*
*
*

You'll notice I haven't included Austin Baecker (92) on the list, simply because he's attending Seattle Thunderbirds camp after having his WHL rights acquired by them earlier this spring. T-Birds Prospect Camp starts this Wednesday.

Goal
Jared Andersen (90)
*

I also didn't include Keith Hamilton (92) and Cole Holowenko (93) on the goaltender's list because both are attending WHL camps as well. Hamilton's attending the Portland Winterhawks camp, which starts Wednesday, while Holowenko is off to the Chilliwack Bruins camp, which starts Thursday.

(Former Cents Forward Brandon Campos)

Great to see former Cents forward Brandon Campos land a pro contract with the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads for the 2010-11 season. Here's the releases from the Cents and the Steelheads:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Merritt, BC - August 19, 2010

The Merritt Centennials would like to congratulate Brandon Campos after signing with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL for the 2010-11 season.

Campos, who was BCHL Interior Conference Most Sportsmanlike Player in 2001, spent the 2009-10 season with the University of BC Thunderbirds of the CIS, finishing tied for first in team scoring with 21 points in 28 games.

The Port Coquitlam product is a veteran of 105 BCHL games and 136 WHL games over four seasons of junior hockey from 2004-08. Campos racked up 111 points in two seasons with the Centennials between 2004 and 2006.

Berube, Campos bring training camp roster to ten
Thursday, August 19, 2010
(Boise, ID) – After re-signing eight members of last season’s National Conference championship team, Idaho Steelheads head coach and director of hockey operations Hardy Sauter announced Thursday two new faces that have signed with the team.

Defenseman Mike Berube and forward Brandon Campos at one point both played in the Western Hockey League, the same league Sauter coached in the past three seasons before being named head coach of the Steelheads last month.

Campos, 22, has spent the past two seasons playing at the University of British Columbia after spending the previous two seasons with the WHL’s Everett Silvertips and Chilliwack Bruins. His best season came in 2007-2008, when he scored 70 points (25 goals, 45 assists) in 67 games with Chilliwack.

Cents Need Billets, Training Camp Preview:

With training camp starting Monday, the Cents continue to plan for the upcoming season. The team held a billet information meeting tonight at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena. I did an interview with Cents co-billet coordinator Andrea Barnes on my morning show today and although the meeting was earlier, there is still some good info about billeting in the interview. So consider having a Cents player stay at your home this season!

Ian Webster wrote an awesome preview of training camp in this week's Merritt Herald:

Cents’ training camp opens Monday

By Ian Webster - Merritt Herald
Published: August 17, 2010 6:00 PM

With the beginning of another Merritt Centennials’ training camp just days away, excitement in this hockey-mad community is rapidly building.

In excess of 100 players are expected to descend upon the Nicola Valley over the weekend in anticipation of Monday morning registration, and on-ice scrimmages starting in the afternoon.

Cents’ head coach and GM Luke Pierce states that his phone has been ringing off the hook in recent days.

“It’s been crazy,” says Pierce. “I’ve been getting calls from all over the continent from players looking to get an invite to camp.”

Pierce, along with assistant coach Chad DeLeeuw, have been busy organizing the five-day camp which runs until Friday, August 27 at noon at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena, and will officially wrap up with the annual intrasquad game that evening at 6:30 p.m.

Approximately 90 rookies will be put through their paces on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of training camp. They will be divided into six teams, with 75-minute games running almost continuously over the opening three days. There will also be a goaltending session at 6:15 p.m. on Monday, followed by a parent meeting in the arena mezzanine at 7:45 p.m.

After a preliminary round of cuts Wednesday afternoon, the fifteen or so Cents’ veterans and off-season acquisitions will join the mix, and all remaining players will be reconfigured into four teams that will scrimmage throughout Thursday and into Friday morning. Another round of cuts will take place Friday afternoon.

Pierce hopes to have approximately 40 players participate in the intrasquad game Friday evening, and then trim that number down to about 30-32 for the team’s quartet of pre-season games beginning on August 29 in Salmon Arm.

Returning players that Cents’ fans can expect to see at camp include forwards Dustin Johnson, Jeff Jones, David Sabey, Steven Wall, Silvan Harper, Sam Gemmell and Alex MacMillan, along with defensemen Steve Tresierra, Jeff Zmurchyk, Kameran Crawford and Austin Baecker.

Last year’s youthful netminders Cole Holowenko and Keith Hamilton are also expected to put in an appearance at training camp, but both will depart somewhat prematurely for WHL camps in Chiliwack and Portland, Oregon respectively.

Rounding out the veteran core will be summer signings Jared Anderson, a 20-year-old goalie from the Grande Prairie Storm of the AJHL, and 18-year-old Jakob Reichert, a much-heralded 6’3” forward who spent last season with the Revelstoke Grizzlies.

Almost a dozen goalies, along with 24 defensemen and 54 forwards make up the ranks of the rookies vying for coveted spots on this year’s Merritt Centennials team. They are coming from as far east as Manitoba and Minnesota, as far south as Dallas, Texas, and as far north as Alaska.

There will be a strong contingent of local talent on hand, too, including Daylan Robertson, Cole Fex, Eric Schmidt, Brendan Colter, Mike Desimone, Russell Sanderson and Payton Schaefer – all of whom played on the Merritt midget AA team that made it to provincials last season.

Other players with a Merritt connection who will be in camp include Briar McNaney, who played last year in the KIJHL, Tye Moses, River Lafferty, and Jordan Paddock. The latter makes his way back to British Columbia from Regina, Saskatchewan after playing for the Merritt bantam reps back in 2007-8.

With so many bodies at training camp, Pierce and DeLeeuw will be getting some much-needed assistance when it comes to scouting and evaluation.

“We’ll have several Junior B coaches on hand,” states Pierce, “including Rylan Ferster (Revelstoke), Dale Hladun (Princeton), Steve Junker (Castlegar), and Tyler Lebow (Kamloops). As well, Maury Grant [Cents’ assistant coach last year] will be here.”

Pierce says that the process of narrowing down the numbers, and identifying the key players who can help the Centennials this year and into the future is a complex one.

“We’ve made it clear that overall, as a team, we want to get younger. That said, we still want to field the most competitive team possible every season. Presently, we have a target range of how many players we would like to have from each age group/birth year, but we’re certainly not going to pass on a talented player, no matter what age.”

High priorities for Pierce and his coaching staff are first and foremost work ethic along with character.

“We want players who are willing to play hard every shift, and are fundamentally good people. They will make a meaningful contribution to the team and to the community.”

Merritt News reporter Robin Poon also previewed camp in this week's paper:

Cents filling out new roster next week
August 19,2010

Robin Poon
News Reporter

The Merritt Centennials training camp kicks off next Monday, beginning a weeklong series of scrimmages that will determine the makeup of this season’s roster.

After registration Monday morning, about 90 rookies from throughout Canada and the United States will be assigned to six teams that will start playing the same afternoon.

Initial cuts will be made on Wednesday afternoon.

In the second part of the camp, Cents veterans and other recruits will join the remaining rookies in four teams.

By Friday evening, Cents head coach and general manager Luke Pierce plans to have 40 players on the ice for the camp’s final intra-squad game.

Following the game, the Cents will have a roster of about 30 players for the team’s exhibition matches against Salmon Arm, which start Aug. 29.

Among the Cents returning from last season is Steve Tresierra, who has been promoted to team captain, succeeding Jordan Soquila.

Tresierra was alternate captain in 2009-10.

Soquila is moving on after two seasons with the Centennials. He has been recruited to play with the Queen’s University Gaels in Kingston, Ont.

Cents goalies Cole Holowenko and Keith Hamilton are also moving on to WHL camps.

Cents Announce Car Wash Fundraiser, Recent Moves:

The Cents have come up with a very unique way to fundraise. They're hosting a FREE car wash on Sunday, September 19th at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena. How the fundraiser works is that the team goes out to get pledges from the community and people donate by pledging an amount PER VEHICLE! So for example, if someone donates 25 cents per vehicle and the Cents wash 100 vehicles, that person winds up donating 25 dollars. I love it!

Here's the official release from Merritt Centennials.com:

Former Centennial Kevin Willison Hired as Coach of Olds:

This was posted on the AJHL website:

The Olds Grizzlys are pleased to announce that Kevin Willison has signed a three year agreement to assume the position of Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations beginning immediately.

Kevin, a Calagary native, will join the Grizzlys after coaching midget teams at The Edge School for the past five seasons. Prior to that he coached at the professional level with the Milwaukee Admirals of the old International Hockey League.

“My coaching philosphy is simple” said Willison, “the team comes first. I strive to instill the respect, understanding and responsibility of the game to the players.”

“If he is able to impart even just a little of his knowledge from his playing days, Kevin will be successful,” said Jim Ross, President of the Grizzlys. “He will have to hit the ground running, but from all indications he will be able to make the transition quickly.”

Willison played two years in the BCHL, before joining the Calgary Centennials. After being drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the 5th round, he played 10 years of professional hockey. While playing with the Admirals, Kevin was a two time winner of the Governor’s Trophy as the league’s top defenseman.

The Grizzly organization would like to thank The Edge School for allowing Kevin to join the organization. For further information contact the Grizzly office.

Elva Reid Service, Monday Moves:

A memorial service for longtime Cents fan Elva Reid is this Wednesday, August 4 at 2 p.m. at the Legion Hall in Merritt. If you're interested in coming to the service and aren't sure where the Legion is, check out this link. Based on Elva's impact on the community, I would expect an overflow crowd to attend the service.

Meanwhile, plans are being developed by the Centennials to honour Elva's memory. In addition to a moment of silence before the home opener on September 17th, discussions are underway to determine how else the team will pay tribute. Word is that there may be a sticker on the player's helmets or patch on their jerseys. Cents coach and GM Luke Pierce has already dedicated the 2010-11 season to the memory of Elva Reid.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
