Cents Magic Numbers:

OK, I've decided to try and figure out what the Cents magic number is to finish fifth in the Interior Conference. I used a formula from this blog for the Mahoning Valley Phantoms of the NAHL.

Basically, it breaks down like this... the Centennials have a potential to reach 60 points if they win all of their remaining nine games, while Quesnel has the potential to reach 58 points if they win all of their games. Which means that Merritt's magic number to clinch fifth in the Interior is 17. So you can see how close things are. Every point the Cents get and every point Quesnel fails to get would knock off one from that magic number.

The Cents magic number against Trail is 14 and against Prince George is eight. With still only nine points separating fifth and eighth, the final three weeks of the BCHL season is going to be VERY interesting to watch as these four teams battle for just three playoff spots.

Although Merritt has a difficult schedule down the stretch, the one advantage that the Centennials have over Quesnel especially is that five of their last nine games are on home ice. Only Vernon, Penticton and Westside have more home wins this season than Merritt, which is tied with Salmon Arm with 14. The Cents make trips to Salmon Arm, Vernon and Penticton, but their record against the top four teams in the Interior is far and away the best of the three teams below them. In fact, Merritt has more wins against the Interior Conference top four than Quesnel, Trail and Prince George combined. So there's no reason to write those five games against the top four off as losses automatically.

Quesnel doesn't play anyone but Williams Lake and Coastal Conference teams for the rest of the season. So don't be alarmed if you hear Cents fans cheering for Nanaimo, Cowichan, Alberni, Victoria and Burnaby in upcoming games against the Millionaires.

Trail's schedule is very similar to Merritt's in that they have six games against the top four, but the Smoke Eaters have lost six of their last seven, including five in a row. The nice part for Trail about its schedule is that it plays six games at the Cominco Arena, where the Smokies are just one game under .500 on the season.

Cents add Buckley as an AP:

(Revelstoke Grizzlies goaltender Cole Buckley (92))

The Centennials have added Revelstoke Grizzlies netminder Cole Buckley (92) as an affiliate player for tonight's game against Penticton.

Buckley is having an outstanding season with the KIJHL's Grizzlies as the back-up to Andrew Parent. The Penticton product has a record of 7-2-0-0 in nine games with a 1.95 goals-against-average and a .952 save percentage. He played last season with the Penticton Midget Vees.

With both Cole Holowenko and Keith Hamilton drafted and on the prospect list of the Chilliwack Bruins and Portland Winterhawks respectively, it's likely that Buckley is on the Cents radar as a goaltending option next season if Holowenko and Hamilton crack their WHL team's rosters.

Hamilton off to Portland, Playoff Picture, Icebreaker Fundraiser, Hobey Baker Nominees:

A big update for this Friday morning...

(Cents netminder Keith Hamilton)

Cole Holowenko will get the start tonight in Merritt against his hometown Penticton Vees after Keith Hamilton was recalled by the WHL's Portland Winterhawks after one of their netminders was injured. There's no word how long Hamilton will be with the Hawks. In the meantime, this gives Holowenko another chance to shine as we enter the final ten games of the season. Remember, the 17-year-old already has one win this season over the Vees...

(Official poster for the Cents Icebreaker Fundraiser)

Tomorrow night marks the 15th Annual Centennials Icebreaker Fundraiser. In addition to the masterful MC skills of yours truly, the night also features an AMAZING dinner catered by the Cents Booster Club, plus performances from Cents defenceman Steve Tresierra (who sounds A LOT like Paul Brandt when he sings) and local favourites The Gary Cooper Band.

It's the biggest fundraiser of the season for the hockey club, which of course, is still a non-profit society so hopefully all Cents fans get their tickets. They are $50 and are available at tonight's game vs. Penticton, plus Merritt Printing, Nicola Valley Memorial Arena and the Centennials Marketing office on Voght Street across from Subway.

I had the chance to speak with Cents Marketing Manager Maddison Canuel on my morning show earlier this week regarding the event.

Award candidates must exhibit strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Luke Pierce Post-Game, Interior Conference Playoff Picture:

The Cents certainly had a game to forget in Prince George on Saturday night. I'll leave it to coach and GM Luke Pierce to explain what happened, including why he was ejected early in the third period. Luke was gracious enough to join our play-by-play man Alex Grebenyuk on the post-game show.

Former Cents Captain Casey Pierro-Zabotel Called Up to AHL:

(Casey Pierro-Zabotel while with the Cents)

Former Centennials captain and the franchise's third all-time scoring leader Casey Pierro-Zabotel has been called up from the ECHL to the AHL by Pittsburgh. Here's the release from the ECHL.com:

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Pittsburgh Penguins have reassigned left wing Casey Pierro-Zabotel from the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL) to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, it was announced today.

Pierro-Zabotel, 21, has posted 33 points (9+24) in 38 games with the Nailers this season, and departs for northeastern Pennsylvania ranking second on the squad in scoring and first in assists. He posted a season-high nine-game point streak which was halted last weekend, and has registered 20 points (6+14) in his last 18 games.

The native of Kamloops, British Columbia entered his first year of professional hockey having come off of a banner year with the Vancouver Giants (WHL), where the 6-2, 210-lb left wing posted a league-best 115 points (36+79) in 72 regular-season games. His 115 points shattered the Giants’ single-season point record, an achievement which earned him Vancouver’s first-ever recipient of the Bob Clarke Trophy, awarded to the WHL’s leading scorer.

In 294 games split over five seasons between the Merritt Centennials (BCHL) and the Vancouver Giants, Pierro-Zabotel has recorded 346 points (132+214).

Pierro-Zabotel was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round (80th overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Former Cents forward Alessio Tomassetti signs with KIJHL Kamloops:

(Former Cents forward Alessio Tomassetti)

Former Cents forward Alessio Tomassetti (89), who was released by the team just before the season started, has signed on with the Keystone Cup host Kamloops Storm of the KIJHL.

Tomassetti is from Quesnel and was playing senior men's hockey in that community when the Storm came calling. He was acquired by the Centennials from the Fort Francis Sabres of the SIJHL for future considerations back in September 2008. Tomassetti had 13 points in 56 games with Merritt last season.

Former Cents forward HT Lenz Commits to Vermont:

(Former Cents forward H.T. Lenz, now with Des Moines of the USHL)

Former Cents forward H.T. Lenz has committed to the University of Vermont. Here's the release from the USHL website:

The Des Moines Buccaneers announced that forward H.T. Lenz will play collegiately at the University of Vermont following his USHL career.

The native of Vienna, Virginia leads Des Moines with 15 goals and is third on the team in scoring with 32 points (15g, 17a) through 33 games this season. It is the second USHL season for Lenz after appearing in all 60 regular season games for the Bucs in 2008-09 and collecting 28 points (8g, 20a).

Lenz will be joined by Buccaneers teammate Connor Brickley at Vermont in addition to three other current USHL players who are committed to the school; Anthony DeCenzo (Tri-City Storm), Blake Doerring (Fargo Force), and Colin Markison (Omaha Lancers).

Revised Interior Conference Playoff Picture:

I decided to rejig the Interior Conference playoff picture to NOT include Williams Lake in the group of "Interior Teams Battling for Last Playoff Spots".

Although the Timberwolves aren't mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, they are mired in an eleven game losing streak in which they've been outscored 87-13 and so it's unlikely they'll rally in the final 16 games to overtake whichever teams wind up in the seventh and eighth spots. Right now Willams Lake is eleven points behind the eighth place Spruce Kings.

Game vs. Vees, AP Deadline, Cancer Fundraiser, Olympic Torch Relay:

It's a busy Friday in blog-ville, also in Centennials-land so I've got four interviews for today.

First it's a preview with head coach and GM Luke Pierce of tonight's huge game against Penticton. Of course, it's the Merritt debut for the two newest Centennials, Sam Gemmell and Lucas Daoust.

Also, a lot of teams in the BCHL will be adding affiliate players to their rosters before the end of the day as today is the deadline for signing junior B or minor hockey players as AP's. I talked to Luke about his plans for the Centennials.

The Cents also have a huge fundraising night set for tomorrow's game against Westside. It's Canadian Cancer Society night with tons of ways to get involved. I talked to Cents Marketing Manager Maddison Canuel on today's Q101 Morning Show.

Cents longtime supporter, billet and volunteer Rusty Brewer was announced as the community torch bearer for the Olympic Torch Relay earlier this week. I had Rusty on the Morning Show today as well to get her thoughts about the honour.

Cents sign forward Lucas Daoust, Cents tryouts on the move:

(new Cents forward Lucas Daoust, then with Nipawin)

The Cents have used their final card to fill a 20-year-old roster spot by signing forward Lucas Daoust (89), who most recently played with the MJHL's Nipawin Natives. The Kamloops product had 14 points in 27 games with Nipawin this season before he was traded to the OCN Blizzard of the MJHL on January 6. He had 22 points in 56 games with the Natives last season. During the 2007-08 season, Daoust played with Golden and Columbia Valley of the KIJHL, posting 42 points in 42 games. He'll wear number 19 in his debut Friday against Penticton.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had the chance to interview Sam Gemmell after practice today, I'll hopefully have that posted tomorrow. He's very excited to play in Merritt and show what offensive skill his stats may not indicate. Gemmell will wear Joey McEwan's former number 21 for the Centennials.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Forward Jeremy Long (89), who's actually from Merritt and was with the Cents during training camp, has been traded in the KIJHL. Long was acquired by the Golden Rockets from Grand Forks for future considerations. After sitting out competitive hockey last season, he has six points and 100 penalty minutes in 27 games this season. Long started the year with Chase and was released at the end of September when the team signed former Cents forward Devon Hobbs as its last 89-born player.

(Williams Lake forward Jordan Hirano)

Forward Jordan Hirano (92), who was in Cents camp in August, has been signed by the Williams Lake Timberwolves from the KIJHL's Fernie Ghostriders. Hirano showed some grit and good skill during training camp and I was hoping that he'd be back trying to make the Cents this fall, but alas he'll be plying his trade in Williams Lake. I think he'll get the ice time to be successful with the Timberwolves and it'll be interesting to see how the Fernie product adapts to the junior A level.

Former Cents defenceman Abbey traded in KIJHL:

(Former Cents defenceman Cody Abbey - shown with the KIJHL's Revelstoke Grizzlies)

Another former Centennials player changed teams at the January 10th deadline as Cody Abbey (90), who played two games in Merritt during the 2008-09 season and four games as an AP with Williams Lake this season, was dealt in the KIJHL from the Revelstoke Grizzlies to the Nelson Leafs.

Luke Pierce Trade Deadline Thoughts, Tyler Barr Update:

I had the chance to talk with Cents coach and GM Luke Pierce this morning regarding the one trade the team made on deadline day, acquiring Sam Gemmell from Penticton for Andrew Pickering.

Imagine seeing this every day on your way to the rink for a home game! That's exactly what former Cents forward Tyler Barr deals with after joining the Pensacola Ice Pilots of the SPHL. A couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to catch up with T-Barr and get an update on his professional hockey career. I'll say this, the surroundings look rough!

Cents trade Pickering to Vees for Gemmell:

(The newest Merritt Centennials player - forward Sam Gemmell)

The BCHL trade deadline came and went with the Centennials making just one roster change. In what ended up being no surprise, forward Andrew Pickering (89) was traded to the Penticton Vees for forward Sam Gemmell (90).

Cents coach and GM Luke Pierce admitted that Pickering requested to be moved to a contender so he looked to accommodate that request. I'll admit I don't know a lot about Gemmell, who stands 5'9" and 172 lbs., but current Cents Jordan Soquila and Alex Valenti played with him in Burnaby last season and know exactly what he brings to the table. He played last season with the Express before being traded to Winkler of the MJHL and then jumped to Arizona State University (and was ironically a teammate of former Cents Patrick Rogan and Jarret Costello). Gemmell had two assists in 18 games with Burnaby and 12 points in 23 games with Winkler during the 08-09 season. He notched 15 points in 18 games with ASU this season, showing that he does have some decent offensive skills.

I'll have more on this trade with Cents coach and GM Luke Pierce tomorrow.

Former Cents forward Tyler Halliday A Cougar Again:

(Former Cents forward Tyler Halliday)

Former Cents forward Tyler Halliday is back in Prince George. Here's a release from the Cougars...

Prince George Cougars General Manager Dallas Thompson announced Sunday the Cougars have acquired 20-year old forward Tyler Halliday and a third round pick in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft from the Kelowna Rockets. In exchange, the Cougars dealt 20-year old defenceman Dallas Jackson to the Rockets.

Halliday returns to the Cougars after being acquired by the Rockets in November. Halliday played a total of 85 games for the Cougars, including 19 at the start of the 2009-10 season. Halliday has seven goals and 10 assists in 40 games this season.

Jackson, who the Cougars acquired prior to the 2008-09 season, heads to Kelowna after playing a total of 86 games for the Cougars. Jackson was the Cougars leading scorer this year, with 11 goals and 29 points.

The Cougars thank Jackson for his service to the team both on and off the ice and wish him future success.

Start Time vs. Cowichan Changed:

The Centennials have announced that their home game against Cowichan Valley on Saturday February 6 has been changed from a 7:30 pm start time to a 3 pm start time because of the Olympic Torch arriving in Merritt and a number of celebrations that evening to coincide with the Torch coming to town.

As always, Q101 will still have our pre-game show 30 minutes before the opening faceoff which means the broadcast starts at 2:30 pm.

For more information on the Olympic Torch coming to Merritt, click here.

Pickering on the move?

Cents head coach and GM Luke Pierce mentioned during the pre-game show on Q101 that forward Andrew Pickering (89) is a healthy scratch for tonight's game in Trail against the Smoke Eaters as a precautionary measure ahead of tomorrow's trade deadline. Scott Morisseau is playing his second game for Merritt since being added as an affiliate player a couple of weeks ago. He's taking Pickering's spot in the line-up.

Interesting that Pickering is a scratch while other 1989-born Cents players like Jordan Soquila, Ryne Bodger and Alex Valenti are all in the lineup. Stay tuned to the blog for all the latest moves by the Centennials and around the BCHL.

Cents AP Donselaar, Trade Deadline Details with John Grisdale:

(Forward Colton Donselaar (90) of the KIJHL's Beaver Valley Nitehawks)

The Cents have added another junior B player averaging more than a point-per-game in forward Colton Donselaar (90) of the KIJHL's Beaver Valley Nitehawks.

Donselaar, who attended Vernon's spring camp back in 2008, has 12 goals and 25 assists in 32 games with Beaver Valley this season. The Winfield product is tied for 30th in KIJHL scoring, but he's already eclipsed last season's total of 29 points in 51 games, which was a career high. He joins teammate Scott Morisseau on the Cents affiliate list.

McEwan joins OCN, Hardy with Aldergrove:

(Former Cents forward Joey McEwan, now with OCN of the MJHL)

Glad to see that former Centennials tough guy Joey McEwan (89) found a place to play out his junior hockey career. He's landed with the OCN Blizzard of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and made quite the impact in his debut tonight against Swan Valley, posting 19 penalty minutes (5 for fighting, 2 for being the aggressor, 2 for cross checking and a game misconduct).

Word is that the Blizzard can use McEwan's toughness. There's more on the OCN squad and Joey joining them on this blog.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Former Cents forward Thomas Hardy, now with Aldergrove of the KIJHL)

One former Centennials player who's status I missed out on earlier this season is Thomas Hardy (91). When he left Merritt in September, it was my understanding that he was hanging up the skates to focus on his education at UBC. But Hardy joined the PIJHL's Aldergrove Kodiaks at the end of September and has been playing with them ever since, putting up 15 points in 23 games.

Hardy was acquired by the Cents from Burnaby back in June 2009 in exchange for RJay Berra.

Trading Season:

The BCHL saw 27 trades made between December 26th and January 10th last season, compared to six so far this season with four days to go before the trade deadline arrives. I wouldn't expect the Centennials to be as heavily involved this year as last. Head coach and GM Luke Pierce has indicated to me that it looks like there are a lot more teams in the BCHL looking to be a buyer at the deadline than a seller.

BCHL trades since December 26:

Jan. 4: Williams Lake trades F Justin Hogan, 19, to Quesnel for future considerations.
Jan. 3: Prince George trades D Brandon Nadolny, 19, and future considerations to Langley for G Andrew Walsh, 19.
Jan. 2: Quesnel trades F Brett Howe, 19, to Brooks (AJHL) for future considerations.
Jan. 2: Surrey trades F Morgan Bonner, 19, to Newmarket (CCHL) for future considerations.
Dec. 30: Williams Lake trades G Richard Virtanen, 20, to Wellington (CCHL) for future considerations.
Dec. 27: Cowichan Valley trades F Drew George, 18, to Weyburn (SJHL) for F Chris Daniels, 18, and future considerations.

The Cents have now signed three of the top seven scorers from the KIJHL as affiliate players after picking up forward Luke Richardson (90) from the Revelstoke Grizzlies. Richardson, who was in training camp with the Centennials, has 24 goals and 24 assists in 32 games with Revelstoke this season. The Kelowna product is sixth in KIJHL scoring. Richardson joins teammate Lucas Blinkhorn (89), who is seventh in KIJHL scoring, and Scott Morisseau (91) of Beaver Valley, who is first overall in KIJHL scoring.

Cents whip Willams Lake 6-1:

Wow, five in a row! The Cents have won five straight for the first time in almost four years. Here's the official recap from Merritt Centennials.com:

January 2, 2010 - Merritt, BC

Alexander MacMillan and Mitch Jones each had a goal and three assists as the Merritt Centennials skated to a 6-1 win over the Williams Lake Timberwolves in BC Hockey League play Saturday night.

Stephen Wall, Dustin Johnson, Colton Sobchak and Andrew Pickering also had goals for Merritt (16-23-0-2) while Johnson added two assists. Keith Hamilton made 22 saves for his eighth win of the season.

Ryan Stanimir had the lone goal for the Timberwolves (9-28-1-0), while Evan Dauenhauer made 43 saves in the loss.

The Cents went 3-for-9 with the man advantage and Williams Lake was 0-for-5 on its power plays.

Merritt's next game is Sunday in Westside while the T-Wolves are off until they visit Penticton next Friday.

News & Notes: Dustin Johnson is now tied for fourth in the BCHL with 26 goals ... Johnson is also riding a three game goal scoring streak and a two game assist streak ... Andrew Pickering is on a two game goal scoring streak ... Mitch Jones and Alexander MacMillan's four point games established a career best for each of them ... Alex Valenti and Ryne Bodger were the scratches for Merritt as both are still recovering from injuries ... The five game winning streak is Merritt's best since the 2005-06 season when the team won five in a row from February 16 - 25, 2006 ... The Cents outscored their opponents during that streak 27-11 while during their current streak, they've outscored the opposition 25-12.

Cents add Morisseau, Brears, Laird:

(KIJHL scoring leader Scott Morisseau of the Beaver Valley Nighthawks)

This is kind of old news since he already played a game for the Cents, but the team has added KIJHL scoring leader Scott Morisseau (91) to its roster as an affiliate players. Morisseau played in Wednesday's game in Trail on a line with Dustin Johnson and Colton Sobchak in limited minutes as Cents coach Luke Pierce mixed up the lines a bit later in the game, which Merritt won 4-3 in overtime.

Morisseau seems like a dynamic player, who although small, can put up big time numbers at the junior B level. It remains to be seen what his plans are for next season and which teams, WHL or BCHL, would be interested in signing him. Time will tell if he's in the Cents future plans or them in his plans.

(Forward Chad Brears (91) of the KIJHL's Princeton Posse)

The Cents have also added forward Chad Brears (91) of the KIJHL's Princeton Posse as an affiliate player. The Cold Lake, Alberta product is sixth in Posse scoring with 11 goals and 13 assists in 31 games. He's had five multi-point games this season, but is currently mired in a five game pointless streak. No word if and when he'll make his BCHL debut with the Cents.

(Defenceman Brett Laird (91) of the KIJHL's Chase Chiefs)

The Cents have also added defenceman Brett Laird (91) from the KIJHL's Chase Chiefs as an affiliate player. The West Kelowna blueliner is in his third season with the Chiefs and has 29 points in 79 career KIJHL games. He also played last season in the KIJHL Top Prospects Game. Laird was with Quesnel during training camp earlier this season. His situation is very similar to Brears' in that it remains to be seen when he'll make his Centennials debut.
